*How Jesus Changes Us
Have you ever wish to be on someone else’s foot? Or have you ever wonder how is it to be somebody else? If you can relate, well maybe you want a change of life.
Change is always equated to risk, because we fear about the future, we still regret our past, and we doubt our abilities. But a closer look will draw us to conclude that change can be more defined as unleashing our full potential. Calling on to God and accepting that we need a changed life is difficult, moreso in facing change in itself, but take heed for God knows this and He has His own way of doing it. First, He will ease our fears. For thousands of years, the devil use fear to distract us and keep us away from God, that’s the very reason why we are afraid to go back to Jesus when we did something wrong. The truth about forgiveness has been covered up with lies about God’s wrath for the sinners. But just so you know, our sins have already been forgiven, and the sins that we are yet to commit have already been paid for. There’s also a bonus, our Father knows our weaknesses in succumbing into fear, for that reason He left us with passages about fear in the Bible, all 365 of them to last us a year. “I asked the Lord for help, and He answered me. He freed me from all anxious fears.!” Psalm 34:4
Second, He will eliminate your guilt. All of us have wounds to heal because all of us are guilty of something, or have been a victim by other people. But who says we need to carry that baggage with us? Didn’t Jesus invited us take His yoke instead for it’s light, why not let Him take over? When Jesus healed the paraplegic man He said “…,friends your sins are forgiven.” Luke 5:20 A paraplegic man doesn’t look good, but instead of healing his physical malady, Jesus paid more attention to his spiritual illness. This shows how God looks past on our appearance and locks His gaze into our hearts. He does not capitalize on Matthew “the tax collector” today, but excited instead on Matthew “the future evangelist”. Between us and God, forgiveness is not conditional, it is a given fact. Jesus forgives us instantly, freely and completely, all because we are destined to be with Him forever.
He will enable you to do what seems impossible. God maybe telling us some things, things that we deemed impossible – a challenging work, giving up an enjoyable but nasty habit, forgiving an enemy, loving an unlovable person. If it seems hard, then God wants to stretch our faith. Faith is not about getting permission to do what is easy. It’s about gaining the courage to do what’s difficult. It’s not about staying in your comfort zone. It’s about going where God leads you. “Jesus said, ‘Without God, it is utterly impossible. But with God everything is possible!” Mark 10:27 That’s what we call God empowerment!
No one has to stay the same, when we cry for help to change, God is more that willing to help us, despite of the circumstances. We are not perfect because He is not finished with us yet. Through the many changes in our lives, we have to maintain the discipline and temperament of a long-distance runner, who, focused on the end goal, just keeps running through the inevitable bumps on the road. Ask God to take the lead.*
*Are you trying to break free from a dangerous appetite? Have you been meaning to change your habitual anger outburst? Struggling with an addiction? God is ready to step in. Temptation is not a sin, it only becomes one when you give in to it. But if you think that it’s too over powering for you to overcome, then Satan fooled you …because there is always a way out:
Predetermine your pattern of temptation. Ask yourself: when and where you are most tempted; Who are you usually with when it happens; what temporary benefit do you get when giving in to its calling; and how do you feel right before you were tempted (were you depressed or hungry then?). Knowing and understanding yourself will help you guard your reactions when faced with your weaknesses.
Protect the condition of your heart. “Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything that you do.” Pr.4: 23 The heart is our inner self; it is who we really are. Negative emotion is the devil’s foothold in our lives. Whenever we feel discouraged, bored, alone, insecure, hurt and spiritually dry, the rock that supports us crack and the devil gets a grip on us, a secure starting point from which further advances can be made. Don’t let destructive feelings eat up your heart, because contrary to our beliefs that temptation lies around us, it actually begins within us.
Pray for God’s help. Apart from God we are nothing, without His help we cannot do anything. If you find yourself on the verge of sinning, send God an SOS. Don’t be afraid to ask for His help for He would skip the “I told you so” speech, instead He’ll bestow us mercy - for the inconvenience that we’ve been through, and then He’ll shower us with grace - to overcome the lure of sin. Don’t even get embarrass even if you’ve been giving in to the same temptation. Just so you know, you can call on to Him a hundred times a day to defeat a particular temptation, and yet He’ll still be eager to help you out. The Bible says “Call to Me when trouble comes; I will save you…”Ps. 50:15 This guarantee surpasses, million times, the US Secret Service’ job.
Point your attention elsewhere. Temptation starts with a thought. If we were to dissect the anatomy of sin, we’d say it all begins with the attention (the thought), then the arousal (the craving), and finally the action (the decision to disobey). Since the battle for sin starts with the mind, the quickest way to defuse its appeal is to turn your attention on to something else. Because the more we block a thought the more it becomes imposing, the more it consumes us. Don’t fight it, just change the channel of your mind and get interested in other idea.
Participate in a support group. There are problems that are unbearable or sins that are too habitual. This is the reason why God gave us friends. They were given to us not just to co inhabit with, they’re here to help us overcome the calling of sin. We need to unload ourselves to godly friends who would pray for us, guide, and encourage us. The Lord wants us to share our burden with somebody whom we trust because it liberates us, for as we reveal, we heal. Confiding our weakness is not easy, but if we won’t humble ourselves and admit that we need help, then we’re just keeping ourselves from getting better. Are you intimidated by temptations? Don’t be, since every temptation is an opportunity to do good. As the devil use it against us, God utilizes it to mold us. Because every time you turn your eyes away from sin, you look straight into God’s eyes. Whenever we say no to temptation, we nod in agreement to God’s plans for us. If you believe in God and the power He gave us to defeat the power of sin over us, then temptation is just a choice, nothing more.*
A billboard along Edsa says, “the one constant is change”, sounds like another oxymoron right. Ironically it’s true, these simply illustrates that all of us doesn’t have to stay the same, that changes meant growth. Even a larvae metamorphosed into a butterfly, a pony grows into a beautiful stallion, a tadpole into a frog and if he’s lucky he can even turn into a prince. We came into this world raw and crude, because God Himself wants to mold us into the kind of person he wants us to be and to do this, He uses circumstances in our lives: Crisis. Sometimes it is when we are on our lowest ebb that we say our most honest prayer, we have our most intimate talk with God. Good news is God listens to those who have time to pray and He speaks to those who have time to listen. But this doesn’t mean He will take away our troubles, He won’t do such a thing because He wants us to learn.
The Lord wants us to discover our own weaknesses and strengths. One thing interesting about God is, He’s more concern with our character than with our comfort. What He’ll do instead is guide us with our decisions. When God leads us to the edge of a cliff, only 1 of 2 things will happen - either He will catch us when we fall or he will teach us how to fly. Confession. No change would take place unless we admit our sins and accept our faults. It is when we go out of ourselves that something happens within the self, when we confess our mistakes we become remorseful and humble. God feels these, and that melts His heart into welcoming us in His loving embrace. As far as sin is concern the hardest part is admittance, if we are able to go through this, then conversion is inevitable. The moment we cry for a change, God will clean up all the patches, fill up all the holes and bleach all the stains, slowly but surely. A change of heart will allow God to give us a new identity, a new beginning. He will change us from the inside out. Clean slate. 2 Cor. 5: 17 (NIV) says,” Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come”. Change doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s not going to be easy, it may even hurt a little. Yet, we donot have to stay the same – same life condition, same sin, same wrong self- image. God can and will do something about it, rest assured He will not allow us to stay in whatever condition we have. Come to Jesus and ask Him to change you. He will not judge us based on our performance right now, instead He is thrilled on what we will become. As He promised, He won’t let go until He is finished.
The holiday rush is here-your work hours are piling up, you’re calorie-counting like crazy, and love is definitely in the air. But why only during this time of the year, what’s so special about Christmas?
History dictates that some of the most relevant events in our century was the Pearl Harbor bombing, and man’s first step on the moon. But we believers knew that no news is bigger than God’s coming here on Earth, the headline news could either be, “The World’s First Glimpse of Our God” or “God’s First day On Earth”.
“He became like men and was born a human being.” Phil.2:7 (Amp) If we were on God’s shoes we might have landed here on Earth in a burning chariot, or on a cloud with a million angels. Ironically, He chose to came here in the most humble way, born like any ordinary child, and His finishing touch to this grand entrance was to be confined in a manger. He is every inch a man, like you and me, a good news in itself because He can understand us better this way.
If we were Jesus’ playmate we might have asked Him, “Hey, what brings you here anyway?” No offense meant but Betlehem is no place for a king, lest the King of Kings.
The Ritz could have done better, and yet He came. Jesus came to give us a better glimpse of who God is. Our Father is a loving God, someone we can trust, our strict image of Him is a complete misnomer for His mercy never runs out for us, it’s new everyday; He came and endured the grueling heat of the sun while living in Nazareth just to show us the true meaning of life, which is to live in search of God - that exemplifies living from mere existing. Most importantly, He came so we can have eternity, so we can join Him in His mansion where He guaranteed a place for each one of us who love Him.
So, what’s so special about Christmas then? It’s about JESUS, right…and its about US. For we are the reason that He came. Christmas is God’s desperate way to reconnect with us, when He chose to use Christ to bind us with Him. The next time we see a Christmas belen, stop and reflect on how that kid gave us life, and each shepherd in the manger represents us all, who came to His calling and believed.
Santa’s gift was not the best after all. God’s present is available everyday of the year, wrapped in His blood and bounded by His love…just waiting to be opened.
This Yuletide season, the proverbial greeting is “Merry Christmas”, wherein merry here means joyful. For most of us, greeting everybody with that phrase is just part of the cliché associated with our modern commercialized Christmas. The fact is, Jesus himself commanded us, ” Always be joyful.”1 Thessalonians 5:16.
Look around, are the people we love happy? Are you happy? How come joy is so elusive when God himself presented us with this gift? In this age of instant coffee and on line shopping joyfulness becomes an expensive commodity because we anticipate the wrong circumstances – The BAD that shouldn’t happen and the GOOD that doesn’t happen. It’s funny, but it keeps us from seeking joy as a possibility. At the end of each tiring day, after all the nice things that happened along with the discouragements of the whole 24 hrs, happiness is still a choice. So, how do we make that choice?
Choose to hear the good news. Look at the cross to see the whole story – Jesus came and died on the cross to tell us how much He love us; While waiting for His return He offers a relationship with us so He can make a difference in our lives; He is with us in all our daily troubles and is preparing us an eternal joy, which we can start to have now. There, how’s that for a newsflash, far better than no work holiday, right?
Choose to do what God says. “When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” Luke 2:15 Those shepherds must have been scared, confused or even skeptic on what they have been told that time, yet they chose to follow God, and it made them happy. God might be telling us to do or give up some things we really enjoy. We can ignore it, because it’s hard to renounce something we enjoy, but one thing is for sure, ignoring the Lord will make us miserable because all His commands are for our own good and joy.
Choose to tell someone else. Wish you could give more than just presents from a store? If we’ve got our Christmas list covered, or if all our daily needs are met, let’s consider ourselves blessed in many ways and give back to the world in our own way by telling a friend how much joy we have living in God’s love. Share Jesus. Express how a changed life made our life happy. “With joy they should tell what He has done.” Psalm 107:22 Not only do simple acts of altruism benefit those in greater need, stepping outside of ourselves and thinking about others can feed the soul - and in the process, lift our spirits.
Joyfulness doesn’t mean living a problem-free life; instead it is living a happy life despite of. We don’t need self-help books and seminars to have one. Walking with God is the best adventure, finding God is the best achievement, and having God as companion is the best source of happiness! – This is the “New Science of Happiness”. Live life!
When You Feel Disappointed
We face circumstances twenty-four hours everyday, so is disappointment. No one gets to skate through life without it. That is because disappointments are to the soul what a thunderstorm is to the air. Moses’ world must have crumpled when he saw the Red Sea in front of him as he was being chased by the Egyptians, same with the guy next door when the stock market crushed. Both guys were devastated but the difference is that this guy must have saw the incident as a dead end – to his dreams, career, and happiness; whereas Moses, who knows God as He is, viewed it as a crossroad.
When life doesn’t turn out like you expected, it won’t help to be demanding to God, or to have a pity party for yourself, don’t even get jealous, or worst, blame others for your mishaps. Instead, hear God’s message. Along with the other gifts that God gave us, He also allowed each one of us to have a personal line with Him. We can talk to Him anytime of the day and tell Him our concerns and wait for His answers. We can do this through prayer, it doesn’t have to be a formal one, just a simple conversation with Him will do. Aside from this He’ll use our simple conversation with ordinary people to give us encouragements and to create miracles.
See God’s purpose. Behind every problem and disappointment is a purpose. If we see life’s situation through the lens of God we’ll realize that He uses circumstances to develop our character. In fact, He depends more on circumstances to mold us, than He depends on our reading the Bible. And when things get tough be steadfast on our faith “For the Lords is close to the broken hearted; He rescues those who are crushed in spirit.” Ps.34:18.
Worship God’s Son. When we feel abandoned, and out of options, when the pain is great, we turn to God alone. This is when we say our most heartfelt prayer and have our most intimate moment with our Lord, and this is worship. Our most profound and intimate experiences of worship will likely be in our darkest days. This doesn’t mean that God rejoices over our sorrow, likewise, He is delighted to see us trusting in Him amidst our troubles and He is most pleased by our dependency to His plans.
God’s care did not promise to keep us from life’s storms, he promised instead to keep us through them. He will calm the storm around us, but more often than not he’ll calm the storm within us. Let us not be afraid nor be wary of disappointments, for every scar holds a story and each story carries a lesson… a lesson of love from our Father who sees us through it. Live life!
There was once a spider named Sabine who’s envious of her friends Carol the bird, Gina the butterfly, Vanessa the swan and Pauline the earthworm. She resented Carol for her nice penthouse atop the tree and Pauline for that mysterious pad at the basement, while she lays her head every night in her cozy little web. She feels bad every time Gina greets her a good morning because she looks way prettier in her fabulous wings, and Vanessa, for her gracefulness. Can you relate with Sabine? Do you feel resentful when a colleague collects a bigger salary, or do you turn green as a beautiful woman walk past you? Do you question God’s judgment as you see a friend being blessed tremendously? The problem here starts with comparison. As you compare your life’s status to someone else something happens within you; first, unhappiness creeps in. Jealousy and resentment find its way to our hearts as we try to measure up with others. Then, trouble comes in. Every time you try to covet what others have problem arises, try to picture a kid in a company of another child with a toy, surely a fight is inevitable. If you find yourself in this situation, if you’re hurt or resentful, take heed for the Bible has a proposition for us in order to maintain our happiness.
Realize that God has a good plan for your life. Job 36:13 says, “The godless are full of resentment.” If you don’t believe that God can do something about your life you’ll be susceptible to fear, unnecessary worries, jealousy and resentments. Time and again God turns the bad things into something good, if you love Him. God can take situations that are totally bad and turn them around. When people use situations to destroy us, God on the other hand uses it to develop us. If you believe in God and His love you’ll get to understand that, first and foremost, He did not cause our pain, that He did not choose somebody else over us, so don’t get jealous of other people’s blessings. For a person who loves God knows that His creator has a grand plan for him, and that he should just wait for surprises after surprises that’ll come his way. The cross gave us a perfect example of this grand plan, Jesus’ death wasn’t good but God made it a tool for our salvation. For every slap in the face, every insult, whip, every step towards Golgotha, each nail meant names, our names, to be taken to our Father in His resurrection. If you look at everything in your life using God’s eyeglasses, you’ll see things differently, you’ll understand that the whole lot is just a part of His plan, His great plan.
Rejoice in what you have been given. It’s human nature to capitalize on life’s complexities, and in the process we overlook the good things, we take our blessings for granted.. It happens if you focus on the “self”, if you let your “I” take the reigns, happiness and contentment will always be beyond your reach. It can be counteracted if you start to be thankful for all the things, good and bad, that come your way- your health, your family that loves you, the food on your table, your gifts and talents. And to exercise this further, try thanking the Lord in advance, that’s the best profession of faith.
Refocus on helping others. Again, focusing on yourself and your discomforts won’t change the situation you’re in, instead look around you, that way you’ll know that you’re not alone in your predicaments and you’ll end up counting your blessings. Another thing is that God allowed you to have a burden so that you may help others who are in the same situation, that in your pain you can still bring glory to God and be a blessing to another who is in need.
A perfect life doesn’t necessarily mean a problem-free, hassle –free existence. Life perfection is about appreciating your every step. It’s all about doing your best at every moment, but it’s also accepting who you are and where you’re at at this moment. It is taking your part in this grand plan called life. Lastly, it is about who we know, who we get connected with, it must be the one who loves us like no other, the one who got His hands nailed for you and for me. Life is a gift. Celebrate!
Depression is a “whole-body” illness, involving your body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things. Pessimism, poor self-esteem, excessive guilt, and self-criticism are all common. You may feel sad for no reason at all. Some depressed individual no longer enjoy activities that they once found pleasurable. You might lack motivation, and become more apathetic. You might feel “slowed down” and tired all the time. Sometimes irritability is a problem, and you may have more difficulty controlling your temper. In the extreme, depression is characterized by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.Don’t presume that depression is a disease of the 21st century, the prophet Elijah experienced the same thing when he was running away from King Ahab, “Elijah, a servant of God, said, ‘I have had enough, Lord…take my life!” 1King 19:4
In dealing with this predicament, one should be aware of potential problems, like physical fatigue, the “after the high” lows or post-adrenalin depression, constant problems and loneliness. These things most often than not predisposes us to the problem, it makes us vulnerable to the daily “blows” of life. To deal with depression is to keep a proper perspective on our past. As we get tired and swept through the flood of despair, it will be helpful for us to look back and recall the goodness of the Lord, that even during the lowest point of our lives He manages to insert a packet full of love into that situation, to remind us that He is walking that path with us. Another way is to be thankful for every little thing that comes our way, because gratitude affects our attitude towards life and others. Count your blessings! Amidst the problems that come our way let’s realize that there’s more to life to embrace so live and let live. Let’s not waste time sulking. We only have the here and now.
Be proactive in the present. If we feel down in the dumps it’s okey to take a break, rest, recharge and reorganize our perspective. Renew our relationship with friends and loved ones; reconnect with God; and get back in the game. In life’s race it doesn’t matter how long it took you to the end strip nor the number of times you have stumbled, what matters is that you made it to the finish line. Finally, stay positive about God’s promises. “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Cor. 12:9 this is just one of the many promises of God. The Bible is filled with them, we just have to go over those and claim each promises. Believing in the written promises may sound too good to be true, but what more proof shall we need when Jesus took our place in the cross so we may not experience the pain of death ( depression is nothing to that ). There’s no greater love than that.
Answering Life’s Toughest Questions, part 5
When bad things happen we usually exclaim, “It’s not fair!” Life really is not fair, that’s the reality we ought to accept. Injustices come through our lives in different packages; heinous crimes, discrimination, unethical politicians, even our unrecognized efforts. Now, looking at this facet of life we begin to look for reasons, we look at God and ask Him why, in His great mercy, allowed these things to happen. Take notice that God gets blamed for many things that He did not cause. When tragedy strikes, we sometimes try to sound spiritual by saying, “it must be God’s will”- as if planning our heartaches gives him much pleasure. It is true that He can stop terrible things from happening but He doesn’t, that’s because:
He has given everybody freedom of choice. When we choose to ignore what’s right, God does not force His will on us. He also allows other people free choices, and unfortunately from their mistakes they hurt us. Unlike animals that can’t choose but just to live on instinct, He made us special by allowing us to decide whether or not to follow Him, not because we have to but because we love Him.
Judgment is coming. “In due season God will judge everything man does, both good and bad.” Eccl.3:17 One day at the end of time God is going to settle the score. There will be a judgment day when all the hurt caused on innocent people will be corrected, the Bible said so.
To show us that we need a savior. The fact of the matter is that God’s will is not always done. He has a will for each of our lives, but He has given us free wills too. When we .choose to go our own way and commit mistakes, He chooses to limit Himself. And as we cause problems in our own lives we’ll get to realize how much we need Him, that He alone can make our life easy. “We all have sinned…yet now God declares us ‘not guilty’…if we trust in Jesus Christ who freely takes away our sins.” Rom 3:23-24
Because pain can develop character. Our God is more interested in our character than with our pleasure, and for that matter He is willing to use everything to mold us into the kind of person He wants us to be, and He won’t stop until we understand what He is trying to teach us. God can take situations that are totally bad and turn them around. When people use situations to destroy us God on the other hand uses it to develop us. Just think of a skilled artisan who just won’t stop cutting and snipping on an ordinary log until he gets to see a masterpiece.
Armed with these reasons the most proactive response to life’s injustices is to accept that life is unfair. Jesus himself told us that we’ll encounter a lot of sufferings in this world, but He also assured us that He have overcome the world; that He is greater than any adversity and we can trust in Him and His promises always. Do the right thing anyway! We can do this by starting within ourselves, by looking at the good things in others, in doing so we won’t capitalize on our boss’ ungratefulness, or our spouses’ coldness, and focus instead on more productive things. Lastly, let us wait for God’s reward. “These …temporary troubles are winning for us a permanent reward out of all proportion to our pain.” 2 Cor.5:17
We live in a world where people sin and hurt each other. But when we give our lives to Christ and trust Him, He sees us through each situation and gives us the ability to see how He’s going to bring it all together in the end. For now our duty is to see what God can do in our own lives for our development instead of letting the unfair things devastate us, because one day God will wipe the tears of injustice in our eyes, and that’s for sure.
Answering Life’s Toughest Questions part 4
Do you enjoy reading the obituaries? Or are you opting to buy a memorial plan with the same enthusiasm when buying a new house? Yes, it’s very unlikely, simply because we don’t want to think about death, we avoid speaking about it like plague. Well guess what, statistic says that everything that lives will die, this fact is 100% proven. All of us worry about death because we have this fear of the unknown, we have questions that we can’t answer so we might as well evade the issue. But King Solomon once said that “A wise person thinks about death.” Eccl.7:4 It certainly is because the remaining days of our lives depend on how we see the future, death included. Let us ask ourselves, “How am I looking at death?”
Are we looking at death from the Down side? If we do, we view death as something inevitable, a part of every man’s fate as human being. The look on the down side brings despair, because when you see things in this perspective, life seems useless, a rat race. In this perspective death is the end, and that makes it scary because there is no way for us to know what happens next after we die. If we think that death is morbid, we sure are on this category.
Are we looking at death from the In side? The look from this side brings confusion, because these people know in their hearts that there’s something beyond life and yet they do not know where to get the right information about the matter. Wrong information will eventually lead to wrong decisions.
Are we looking at death from the Up side? If there’s such thing as “reliable source” as far as death is concerned, Jesus is the guy. He tells us that whatever decision we make now will make a great impact in our future.
The Bible says, after we die, we either suffer eternal separation in hell or experience eternal celebration in heaven. Just two destinations, both real places.
Hell is a place of physical, emotional, relational and spiritual torture. It’s a place where you are alone for all eternity, a place where you experience emotional sufferings. And most sadly, it’s a place where there is no presence of God – it is where one is eternally separated from God.
On the other hand, heaven is a place where God is the guiding light, where there will be no more tears, where joy and fellowship abound. Where significance is at the very essence of everything and everybody. Where Jesus is among us.
Everybody wants heaven – that’s for sure. Unfortunately, not everyone here wants to have anything to do with a loving God who did everything he can, including sending his Son to die on our behalf, just so we can be with him forever. Some would simply want to be their own boss. They want to “do whatever they want, because it’s my life anyway”. In effect they are rejecting God and his offer of salvation.
Accept his offer of salvation. Make Jesus the boss of your life right now and make y our eternity secured. Remember that you are not really ready to live, unless you’re ready to die. You can only live a fruitful life if you are sure of what happens after you die.
